World Flags and Their Symbolism

Author: Ryan Dube

It is always fascinating to study world flags and their symbolism.  There are thousands of flags across the world, and each one has its own history and unique symbolism and meaning.  Below you'll find the meaning behind a few of the world flags for some of the world's largest countries.

Examples of World Flags and Their Symbolism

Afghanistan :  This flag is a unique design featuring a background of three colors - black, red, and green.  The national emblem, in the center of the flag, is Mehrab and Pulpit in white, with a flag on each side of it.  The top of the insignia reads "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his prophet, and Allah is Great."  The three colors represent various stages of the history of Afghanistan.  Black represents the 19th century, red identifies its fight for independence, and green identifies the country's hard-won independence.

England : The flag of England features a red cross over a white background.  It is also known as the "St. George."  The flag has its origins in the crusades, and most historians believe that the flag was flown in England just before the second crusade.  England was not actually a nation until 1272 under King Edward I, and its earliest reference was in the Welsh War of 1277.  The United Kingdom flag, of course, is the Union Jack, adopted on January 1, 1801.

Finland : The flag of Finland is the "Scandinavian cross".  It is a blue cross against a white background.  The meaning of this flag is interesting; the blue represents the lakes, and the white represents the snow of the great country of Finland.

France : The French flag was adopted in 1794 and it features three vertical colors - blue, white and red.  The history of this flag comes from the colors used during the storming of the Bastille, and the Royal white.  The current flag is the original flag in use during the rule of Napoleon I.

Germany : The origins of the flag of Germany comes after WWII in the late 1940s.  The new government adopted the black-red-gold from the Weimar Republic on May 9, 1949.  The black-red-gold colors originates from 1870 when the German Empire wanted to incorporate the black and white of Prussia with the white and red of the Hanseatic League.  Therefore the post WWII colors actually represent the history of Germany quite well.

China : The Chinese flag consists of a large yellow star in the corner and four stars off to the right side all on a red background.  The red traditionally represents revolution.  The large gold star stands for the Communist Party, and the small gold stars are the four united classes - workers, peasants, rich, and the capitalists.

Japan : The Japanese flag is the well-known red circle, representing the sun, in the center of a white background.  The history of this flag dates back to the early 1600s when the Tokugawa shogunate adopted the flag on its ships.  By the 19th century, all Japanese vessels bore the flag of the rising sun.

Understanding World Flags and their Symbolism

An excellent resource for more information about world flags, and the symbolic meaning of the colors and images on those flags, are the various country guides that you can find at any library or bookstore.  Of course, if you are traveling in any foreign country, many times locals can offer you a much better insight into the history and local legends surrounding the national flag.  Always show respect and reverence to the flag of any foreign country you are visiting.

The Four Countries Of The United Kingdom

Author: Tomer Harel

The term United Kingdom describes the four countries of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, a sovereign state, is formed by all four of these nations. Rather than use the word countries, they are also referred to as constituent countries. When referring to sports, the four countries are also called home nations.

Interestingly, while they are commonly called countries, they actually have no official titles at all. They are not formal subdivisions of the United Kingdom. However, they do have their own separate national governing bodies. The United Kingdom is the term used to describe international law and intergovernmental organizations that apply to all four countries. However, they are all ruled by Her Majesty's Government in Westminster, England when other laws are concerned.

The way the countries joined to become the United Kingdom is most interesting. The Act of Union joined Wales and England into one country in 1536. In 1707, Scotland and England were joined with Wales to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, The Irish Parliament voted to join the union. Thus, the name was changed to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1922, most of the southern counties in Ireland chose independence and therefore, the name was changed to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Another term that often enters into this discussion is the British Isles. This is actually the name of the island where England, Scotland and Wales are located. Both the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom are located on the British Isles. There are several islands in the Isles and Britain and Ireland are separated by the Irish Sea.

Great Britain, on the other hand, is an island lying off the western coast of Europe, comprising the main territory of the United Kingdom. Great Britain is the official name given to the two kingdoms of England and Scotland, and the principality of Wales. Therefore, the terms Great Britain and United Kingdom cannot be used interchangeably, because Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland.

England is the largest of the four countries of the United Kingdom with a 2010 population of 51.6 million. This accounts for nearly 84% of the UK population. The land area of England is 130,395 square kilometers, occupying most of the southern two-thirds of Great Britain. London is not only the capital of England, but also serves as the government seat and capital of the United Kingdom. England's legal system consists entirely of English law.

Scotland is the second largest of the four with an area of 78,772 square kilometers and a population of 5.2 million. Edinburg is the capital of Scotland and Scots Law is the ruling legal system. Scotland has roughly 790 islands, but only 130 of them are inhabited. Scotland is known for many unique things. The fresh water lochs - or lakes - make up over 600 square miles of the country. Of course, it is in one of these lochs where the famous Loch Ness Monster is said to live. Scotland is known for the poetry and songs of Robert Burns, along with its medieval castles and clans.

Wales is the third largest of the United Kingdom, with a population of 3.0 million people and an area of 13,843 square kilometers. The capital of Wales is Cardiff and Wales has not been politically independent since 1282, when it was conquered by King Edward I of England. Until 1999, Wales was ruled directly from London, when the first elections to the National Assembly of Wales were allowed. The Assembly, however, has limited domestic powers and cannot make law.

Very sparsely populated, Northern Ireland is the smallest of the four countries that make up the UK. With a total area of 13,843 square kilometers, the country has 1.8 million people. The capital is Belfast and the Northern Ireland Assembly was established as part of the Belfast Agreement.

All parts of the United Kingdom share a flag that shows the unity between them. The Union Flag, popularly known as the Union Jack, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. It is the British flag and is called the Union Flag because of the administrative union between all countries of the UK. It is comprised of the three individual flags of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Wales is not included on the flag because at the time, it was a principality, not a kingdom.

While those from other countries may not completely understand the history behind the United Kingdom or why there are four countries in one, it is helpful to at least understand that the names are not interchangeable. While the four parts are very closely related, their history and culture separates them as well. Understanding both the similarities and differences of the four countries helps one to have a better appreciation for them.

Interracial Dating. Time to Open your Eyes

Author: Keith Driscoll

Interracial dating is gaining a lot of popularity and is not something that is frowned upon by society as a whole, and is not taboo in today's society, as witnessed by the numerous interracial dating service websites. While interracial dating is getting more and more mainstream, there are still various people who refuse to accept these relationships and those who may try to physically or emotionally hurt the couple.

Yet anyone who dares to question almost any form of interracial dating is swiftly challenged, criticized and dismissed by the "PC police. In today's world, interracial dating is more often seen than before, but that doesn't mean that a grandmother or grandad is going to give the go-ahead of such a relationship, they are from the kind of days and believe in dating your own kind!!

Black

Blacks (37%) are twice as likely as whites (17%) to have an immediate family member in an interracial marriage, while Hispanics (27%) fall in the middle of those 2 groups. Black men in this country have always been fascinated by white girls, at times almost engrossed, because of the forbidden-fruit rule.

Among younger men and women there is even broader acceptance of interracial dating: 94% of those born since 1977 say it is all right for blacks and whites to date. While it is tempting to constrict our view of interracial dating to the union of a black person and a white person, it is essential to recognize that this practice includes various other cultures and colour lines. In Britain, 40 per cent of black men are married to or living with a white woman, versus only 21 per cent of black women wed to or living with a white man in the United States.

Asian

Asian includes so a lot different groups that it comes close to being meaningless. Asians who live abroad are perhaps more liberal than their counterparts who still live in their home countries. For example, Asian girlsusually date outside their race, as do black men, while it is rare that Asian men and black girls love outside their race.

East Asians are seen as the most feminine, allowing for more dating choices for ladies and fewer for men. In fact, I met a Chinese-American woman who once claimed that all non-Asians interested in East-Asian ladies must have a fetish of various sort!!

Romance

Relationships should be based on mutual affection and love, not race. Interracial relationships have become more common over the past 10 years or so, but folk still have comments to make when they see you out. At this point in human evolution and enlightenment, we should be long past prejudicial attitudes and antiquated ideas about interracial relationships. Opposition by family and friends can cause a terror of abandonment that is suffered by at least one member of the bi-racial liaison. If you are affected in an interracial union, you may feel pressure from both your own community and the community of your significant other. Quite a few people respond to this pressure by trying to hide the relationship.

Conclusion

Today, nearly all African Americans (97%) believe that interracial dating is acceptable. It is my belief that interracial dating is a good thing. Online interracial dating is a great place to interact with other singles or couples that are also interested in pursuing an interracial liaison, romance or just wanting to date a person of a contrasting ethnicity.

Flags - Why Are They Important?

Author: Andrew Cahill

Flags have been in use for way over 4000 years. But they have always been used for the same purpose, to give others information.

King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table used to wear flags on their horses and armour so that others on their side could tell who they were. The Jolly Roger was a symbol of piracy and flown by pirates at the top of their vessels to scare people off meaning "no mercy will be shown to those who resist". Also, more recently the Olympic flag represents the five continents coming together in friendly competition, with the white background symbolising peace.

So in the past, flags have played a significant part in society, which is also the case today. Every nation has a flag, whose colours are tied to the country's history, for example, the orange in the Dutch flag represents the Orange Order that previously ruled the country. National flags are used to represent each country during conflict, sporting competitions, international conferences and events, but they also give individuals a chance to show their patriotism by flying the flag of their nation. This is particularly evident in England when a major football event is happening; the majority of the population who are football fans fly the flag of St George to show that they are behind the English football team.

Clubs and organisations have their own flags too, for example the boy scouts, and all have special meanings but are nevertheless there for symbolic reasons. Many organisations have caught onto the importance of flags and now manufacture these for a wide range of clientele. Piggotts (www.piggotts.co.uk/flags-index.htm) are one such example, and provide flags and flag poles for places such as the parliament buildings and other famous, high profile streets in London.

So why do well feel it's necessary to expose these flags when we are feeling slightly patriotic? Well because they have been used for so many years, they have become a part of our heritage and are a symbol of individuality, which will continue for thousands of years into the future.

Flight News On AVEX Air Show 2010 Held In Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport,Egypt ,Where Business Jets Were Aplenty On Display

Author: Anthony A Juma

With the international support apparent at the AVEX Air Show held at the Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport, in Egypt, recently, coupled with the presence of a large number of both civilian and military delegations, all indications are that this biennial event is gaining in importance as a regional exhibition which is challenging the dominance of other similar shows in Africa and the Middle East.

All the major aircraft manufacturers were there with Airbus stealing the limelight by bringing its "Super Jumbo" A380 to mark its first flight to North Africa and its first landing in Egypt. In doing so, Airbus joined the other 73 main exhibitors from around the world to make the show a resounding success.

Habib Fekih, president of Airbus in the Middle East, said that the 555-passenger A380 was taking part in the 2010 AVEX as an acknowledgement of the significance of the air show in Africa and the Middle East.

Airbus organized orientation tours of the A380 for AVEX visitors and also made a trip to Cairo International Airport and back during which it flew over the pyramids.

Not to be outdone, Boeing also had a strong presence at the show promoting among others the Dream liner and B747-8i.The company's aircraft are seen in the colours of most North African airlines.

Other major manufacturers which came from 16 countries to take part included (in alphabetical order) Bell Helicopter Textron, Bombardier Aerospace, Cessna, Dassault Aviation, Embraer, General Electric Aviation, Gulfstream Aerospace, Hawker Beech Craft Corporation, Rolls Royce and Thales. Smaller companies, to them their contributions just as important, pushed the total number of exhibitors to close to 00, not surprisingly the majority being from Egypt. The flags of France, Turkey, England, The USA, Lebanon, Iraq, Germany, Bahrain, Italy, Malta, Sudan, Pakistan, Spain, Libya and the UAE all flew over the exhibition grounds.

Main sponsor and national flag carrier, Egypt Air Ground Services, Tourism and Tax Free Shops, and Egypt Air Medical Services, used the exhibition to announce major expansion plans.

The airline has signed a contract with renowned Egyptian companies in the fields of restraint and cafeteria management to operate nine cafeterias and restaurants at Borg El-Arab International Airport, which has acurrent capacity of 1, 2 million passengers a year but plans to increase this to around five-million passengers annually.

On the other hand, Egypt Air for Tourism and Tax Free Shops achieved its highest sales target during October 2010 with a total of us$17-million, of which us$5-million were generated from Sharm Elsheikh Airport alone.

Bizjets Aplenty

Most corporate jet aircraft manufacturers took the opportunity of the show to display their latest models. Gulfstream, for example, brought its current flagship, the G550 to the show, but also promoted the other aircraft in its stable to the lucrative Middle Eastern and North African markets.

Brazilian manufacturers, Embraer, promoted its full line of commercial and executive jets, as well as its complementary range of customer services and solutions. In the static display, Embraer showcased the Phenom 300 light executive jet, which made its first appearance in the region, together with the Embraer 190 commercial jet in Bahrain's Gulf Air livery.

The company claims to be the worlds largest manufacturer of commercial jets up to 120 seats, offering the traditional ERJ 145 family ( up to 50 seats) and the Embraer 170/190 E-jets family (70 to 170 seats).

Nearly 900 ERJ 145 family regional jets have been delivered, and 56 airlines in 39 countries have placed more than 900 firm orders for the E-jets.

"Bringing the Phenom 300 jet to AVEX for first time will give visitors and customers the opportunity   to experience Embraers newest state-of-the-art executive jets and see the avant-garde features and technologies previously said Colin Steven, Embraer vice-president ,marketing and sales of executive jets in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Hawker Beech craft Corporation (HBC) also took part at the AVEX show. During the biennial expo, HBC and its local distributor, Premier Aviation, jointly hosted guests at HBCs chalet, as well as showcasing its flagship aircraft, the Hawker 4000.

With its innovative composite construction, the Hawker 4000 is claimed by the company to be the worlds most advanced business jet, delivering an exceptional combination of speed, climb performance and range.

"The region continues to show great interest in our entire product line-up, particularly the Hawker business jets and King Air turboprops" said Sean McGeough, HBC president, Europe, Middle East and Africa."In fact, Hawker Beech craft leads the turboprop market with more than a 65% share in the region."

Most recently, the company received certification of its King Air 350i in Egypt. Now equipped with the Rockwell Collins venue cabin management system and state-of-the-art Beechcarft Flex Cabin capability, the King Air 350i sets the standard in cabin comfort.

Bombardier was at the AVEX International Air Show in force with aircraft ranging from its innovative Learjet and Challenger families.

On display was the Learjet 60 in its latest form, the XR, which, the company claims,"is a model of performance, comfort, value and versatility in the mid-size jet market." The aircrafts higher operating altitudes –certified to 51000 better winds, less traffic and less turbulence.

Also promoted at the show was the Challenger 300 which Bombardier also claims as the "first true super-midsize aircraft" offering transcontinental range and superior long-range cruise speed, with eight passengers.

It can fly from Sharm El Sheikh to any European destination non-stop with a full payload and its airfield performance allows it to operate out of 1525-metre runways with ease. The aircraft is said to have dispatch reliability consistently over 99, 7%.

These were but four of the bizjet manufacturers to display their products, Cessna and Dassualt, for example, being others which also were dynamic in the promotion of their aircraft.

AVEX Awards

One of the highlights of the show was the announcement of the AVEX Custom Jet show awards.

Petroff Air, a private aircraft operator and management company, scooped the top award for "Best Customized Aircraft Interior" for its outstanding interior design of the privately owned Boeing 737-7JF.

Dina Tkacheva, developmemt director of Petroff Air, said that the entire team had contributed to the finished aircraft."We put our heart and soul and time in."She referred to partners such as Boeing and Green point Technologies "who changed their life style for us and moved back and forth between Russia and the US to realize this dream."

Tkacheva explained that the US$85-million customized jet is owned by a Russian businessman who just gave them "the broad outlines of his dream interior design and the whole team worked on putting together the best of everything."

Held on the sidelines of the AVEX International Air Show 2010, the Custom Jet Show honored outstanding achievements and breakthroughs in the categories of aircraft interior and livery design.

For its latest model, the Bell 429, Bell Helicopters gained the award for the "Best Customized Livery Design" which recognizes the most outstanding livery design on an aircraft at the Custom Jet Show on the creative and modern use of design elements, colour usage and overall paint scheme.

Among the nominees were Small Planets Boeing 737-300, Petroff Airs Boeing 737-7JF and Smart Aviations Cessna Citation Sovereign C-680

The awards were offered by the French studio: Happy Design. Each winner received a night blue 1: 100 scale model of the Concorde covered with 450 real diamonds.

A French jeweler set the diamonds by hand  and gave the trophies a diamond value of 1 carat per trophy .They are arranged in such  a way as  to create  a Milky Way livery for each trophy.

Taking plain vanilla aircraft and personalizing them to cater to their owners or users every whim is an emerging trend in the Middle East and North Africa regions private and executive aviation markets.

So high is  the demand that the industry has rapidly grown in size and scope and spans a range of sectors, from bespoke interiors and personalized liveries, in-flight  entertainment and onboard connectivity, to fully equipped bathrooms and kitchens with the capacity to prepare restaurant quality food in-flight.

Lack Of Acceptance Of Gay Men In Sports

Author: rozane

Perhaps a prominent example of recent times involves the use of the word ‘gay’ or indeed the ban of the word, on the back of a personalised NFL jersey, serving as a reminder of an underlying lack of acceptance of the gay man in sporting circles. The ignorant yet all too common perception of the towering or graceful sportsman is certainly non compliant with any uncultured yet common ideas, or discernments surrounding the image of a gay man.

Sports fans and stars alike can be accused of harbouring, or in the very least, allowing the singling out of gay men through the toleration of homophobia to the point where the NFL have been reported to have banned the names of some of their most popular players, Randall Gay, Ben Gay and William Gay on shirts, pendants or flags of any kind. This is of course ludicrous and comes at a time where England’s own Football Premier League has experienced severe cases of homophobic behaviour, including the public abuse of England and Portsmouth star, Sol Campbell, amidst rumours created by the media over his sexual preferences.
Emphasising a clear lack of acceptance of gay men in football, and the expression of what can only be described as ideals and views straight out of the Stone Age; Campbell has suffered a barrage of abuse from the terraces for a number of seasons. However, perhaps providing a chink of light at the end of a very long tunnel, a number of fans have in fact been brought to justice via the courts for the abuse of the Portsmouth full back, although the star is still subject to anti-gay feeling from the terraces today.

In relation, tragic ex-footballer Justin Fashinu who committed suicide 11 years ago preceding severe abuse at the hands of fans and fellow team mates, due to his just reluctance to hide his sexuality, became the victim of blatant embellishment on the part of the media. They had run the headline ‘My gay brother is an outcast’ supposedly a direct quote from his brother and fellow footballer John Fashiniu.
